SEOmoz had a great descriptive article about how Google Intelligence Alerts work.
Google Intelligence Alerts let you know when something "big" happens with your website in either direction. If your tracking suddenly stops, it will send you an email (if you choose that alert). You can also set up alerts for when your traffic spikes up or dramatically slows down.
Here's an example of one that would email you when traffic goes down by 50%.
